London has undergone a bloody start to the New Year with a triple stabbing and double shooting occurring within hours of each other. No sooner had celebrations for 2026 wrapped up than London was faced with the onset of serious crime once again, including an arrest for murder.

At 8pm, on Thursday, January 1, police attended an address in Bondway, Lambeth, following a welfare concern for a man. There, they found the body of Indian national Kaleem Shaik, 41, inside the property. Daniel Levy, 48, of Bondway, Lambeth, was charged with murder on Saturday, January 3, and will appear at the Old Bailey today (Monday, January).

Elsewhere, three men were stabbed on a busy West London road at around 12.50am on Sunday, January 4. Emergency services rushed to Edgware Road following reports of multiple stabbings, where they found the three men injured. The trio were taken to hospital, where one man, aged in his 20s, remains in life-threatening condition.

A second man, aged in his 30s, suffered life-changing injuries. The third man, aged in his 20s, was left with minor injuries. Police have yet to make arrests while urgent inquiries continue.

Just over an hour later, a shooting took place in Broadway, Bexleyheath, at around 2am on Sunday, January 4. Two people were rushed to hospital by the London Ambulance Service, while the A207 Albion Road was closed by police as they investigated the incident. At the time of press, MyLondon was still awaiting an update on the victims’ condition.

The onset of major crimes so soon after New Year’s celebrations may be a cause of concern for Londoners. Critics, among them Donald Trump, have claimed that crime in London is through the roof. Some Londoners will be behind Khan in denouncing Trump’s ‘politics of fear and division’, while official Home Office data on crime tells a story the Mayor would rather avoid.

It is important to say off the bat: comparing crime data is fraught with difficulty. There have been numerous changes in recording methods, even under Khan’s mayorship, making it hard to put statistics side by side.
