Coimbatore Corporation is developing a new surface parking area near the Thomas Park junction at the Race Course to address parking congestion.

The one-acre facility will come up at ₹99 lakh to regulate vehicle parking in an area that sees regular traffic movement during peak hours and public events.

Officials said the surface parking area will accommodate over 80 cars and is expected to be opened for public use within a month, after completion of the work and finalisation of tenders.

Corporation Commissioner M. Sivaguru Prabakaran said apart from this, proposals have also been prepared for three multi-level car parking facilities that will come up at Race Course opposite K.G. Theatre, Cross Cut Road in Gandhipuram, and Raja Street.

The proposed facility at Race Course (Ward 83), opposite K.G. Theatre, will accommodate 95 two-wheelers and 84 cars at an estimated cost of ₹9.5 crore.

At Cross Cut Road, where the existing parking space accommodates 40 two-wheelers and 50 cars, the proposed multi-level structure will increase capacity to 95 two-wheelers and 84 cars, also at a cost of ₹9.5 crore.

At Raja Street, the current facility accommodates 15 two-wheelers and 40 cars. The proposed facility will provide parking for 50 two-wheelers and 100 cars, with the project estimated at ₹9.5 crore.

Detailed project reports are being prepared for all three proposals. The multi-level car parking facility at R.S. Puram will be made fully functional after completion of ongoing repair works, the Commissioner said.
