Couple celebrate incredible 73 years of marriage after meeting over bike chain

Ralph and Beryl Scott have been married for 73 years

A North East Lincolnshire couple who met due to a malfunctioning bicycle have celebrated their 73rd wedding anniversary.

Ralph and Beryl Scott now living in Immingham but previously both from Scunthorpe, received a card from King Charles III in commemoration of their long marriage.

In a tradition dating back from 1917, the Anniversaries Office at Buckingham Palace sends out a card to couples celebrating their diamond wedding (60th), 65th, and 70th wedding anniversaries, and every year thereafter.

Ralph, 92, and Beryl, 90, were married at St Lawrence’s Church in Scunthorpe on December 27, 1952. In a stroke of bad luck, the photographs from their wedding day did not develop so they don’t have any pictures.

When asked how they met, Ralph explained they used to live in Ashby, near Scunthorpe, and Beryl would visit friends on her bicycle, but one day “something went wrong with the bike”.

Ralph helped Beryl adjust the bicycle chain and “sorted it out for her”, and now here they are more than 73 years later.

When asked about the secret to a long marriage, Beryl said she believed it is all about, “Give and take, isn’t it?”
