A Coventry takeaway has been ordered to make major improvements after receiving a one-star hygiene rating. Top 1 Pizza was recently inspected by the Food Standards Agency.

Inspectors visited Top 1 Pizza on Clay Lane in November. Concerns were raised about the hygienic handling of food.

Issues were found with how food was being prepared, cooked, cooled and stored. Officials stated that improvements were ‘necessary’ to comply with hygiene regulations.

Significant improvement was also needed in food safety management, according to Coventry City Council. Systems to ensure that the food sold is safe to eat were found to be lacking.

Cleanliness was also found to be below the required standard. Several issues with the facilities that support proper food hygiene were highlighted by the Food Standards Agency.

Staff also showed a limited understanding of food safety procedures. Concerns were raised over whether good food hygiene would be consistently maintained.
