Dry January may prove easier for Cumbernauld locals this year, as the Lanarkshire town’s only Wetherspoons boozer is set to shut up shop today (January 4).

The Carrick Stone on Teviot Walk next to the town’s Antonine Shopping Centre has announced that it will take its very last orders today. The closing date was announced on a video on TikTok posted by The Centre Cumbernauld.

The video’s caption read: “Sunday, January 4, 2026 is last orders in the Carrick Stone Wetherspoons. Visit this weekend – end of an era.”

The comment section was flooded with gutted Cumbernauld residents, with one stating that it would be a ‘major loss’ to the area, and that there are ‘hardly any pubs left’.

Another user added: “Will most certainly be missed by lots of the locals”, and another said: “Cumbernauld the ghost town.”

One devastated resident said: “Don’t think I’ve been so sad about a pub shutting. Many good times in here.”

Wetherspoons stated in June that all staff were to be offered positions at other pubs owned by the business.
