The Kangra police Saturday said it has constituted a board of specialists to examine the medical records of a 19-year-old student, who died during treatment at a hospital in Ludhiana nearly three months after she was allegedly assaulted by four women students and sexually harassed by an assistant professor at a government college in Himachal Pradesh. The student died on December 26 and was cremated a day later.
As per the statement of the victim’s father, based on whose complaint an FIR has been lodged against the professor and four students, his daughter was admitted to eight hospitals, both private and government, over a period of time. The father had alleged that after being assaulted on September 26 last year, she went into severe mental stress, leading to a rapid deterioration in health.
A police officer said the investigating team has obtained the medical treatment records.
“As per the medical records, the woman was admitted to a private hospital in Ludhiana from where she was referred to the DMCH, Ludhiana, after her health deteriorated late in the night on December 25. She was rushed to the DMCH in the wee hours of December 26 but was declared brought dead by the doctors at the state-run hospital,” an officer said.
Kangra SP, Ashok Rattan, said, “Almost all the relevant medical records of the victim have been collected. The records will be examined by a special panel of experts”.
Police have claimed that the victim’s family didn’t inform the police about the death of the victim. The postmortem examination could not be conducted as the body was cremated before informing the police on December 27.
