Need to know
Merseyside is just one area where raids have been carried out
An amazon device and remote control
- Police forces and anti-fraud units have initiated a major crackdown, carrying out raids across 17 different UK areas, including Merseyside. These operations are specifically targeting the widespread use and distribution of modified Amazon Fire Stick devices.
- Criminal networks manipulate standard Fire Sticks to enable unauthorised access to premium television content from services like Sky, BT Sport, Netflix, and Disney+. These altered, or “jailbroken,” devices allow users to bypass legitimate subscription fees for exclusive programming.
- Individuals found to be illegally streaming content face serious legal penalties even if they are only the consumers. These sanctions can include fines potentially reaching thousands of pounds and the possibility of a prison sentence of up to 12 months.
- Those involved in selling or distributing the modified Fire Stick devices face significantly more severe consequences for their criminal actions. Recent court cases have resulted in custodial sentences with one distributor receiving a 40-month jail term for unlawfully accessing Premier League fixtures.
- Accessing pirated content through illegal streaming severely undermines the UK’s entertainment and creative industries. This activity deprives the talented workforce and legitimate supply chains of fair earnings and necessary revenue.
- Using illegal streaming software exposes consumers to critical cybersecurity risks beyond the legal ramifications. Users’ data and bank details can be put in jeopardy, increasing the risk of fraud and other forms of cybercrime.
- Major organisations like the Premier League, Sky, and FACT (Federation Against Copyright Theft) are collaborating closely with law enforcement agencies to dismantle this illegal market. These groups are working to disrupt the activity through financial penalties, property searches, and delivering legal notices to providers.
- Amazon is responding to the issue by rolling out new safeguards in its latest Fire Stick iterations to block illegal streaming at the source. Future models running on the new Vega OS will eliminate the ability to install altered, third-party apps, allowing only programmes from the official Amazon Appstore.
