A dangerous driver reached speeds of more than 110mph before being pursued by police and when brought to a stop he said: “I’m sorry, I was rushing for work”. As a result of the offence, he has now lost his job.

Khalid Al Mohammad, 23, was driving his BMW on the westbound carriageway of the A4232 in Cardiff on October 30 last year when he was seen by police tailgating other cars. When officers tried to catch up with the defendant, he accelerated to speeds up to 113mph.

A sentencing hearing at Cardiff Magistrates Court on Friday heard Mohammad continued to tailgate other vehicles without leaving enough braking time. Don’t miss a court report by signing up to our crime newsletter here

He then exited the A4232 at Culverhouse Cross and drove on a single carriageway on Port Road at 73mph in a 40mph zone.

The defendant crossed into the eastbound carriageway and a bus lane, despite his view ahead being blocked by trees and bushes.

Other road users had to take evasive action to avoid hitting Mohammad’s car.

Despite this, he reached speeds of 94mph on the wrong side of the road towards an oncoming vehicle, and had to brake sharply on two occasions.

The defendant reached the entrance of a quarry but the gates were closed, which led him to carry out a U turn.

Pursuing officers were able to prevent him from driving off and he got out of the vehicle.

He told officers: “I’m sorry, I was rushing for work”.

Mohammad, of Mackintosh Place, Roath, pleaded guilty to dangerous driving, failing to stop and driving without insurance.

The court heard he has no previous convictions.

In mitigation, it was said the defendant worked in the “air car” industry but as a result of this offence he has lost his employment.

He previously provided financial support to his mother and young siblings, and hopes to complete his studies in engineering.

Mohammad was sentenced to 24 weeks imprisonment, suspended for 12 months.

The defendant was ordered to carry out a 40 day rehabilitation activity requirement and was ordered to pay a total of £239 in costs and a victim surcharge.

He was also disqualified from driving for one year.
