Shoppers have just a few days left to bag a bargain at the Middlesbrough Smiggle store before it closes its doors for good. A sign appeared in the shop window at the Hill Street Shopping Centre in December stating “end of lease”.

Teesside Live contacted the store and was told the store would be closing after Christmas. A worker at the store on Sunday, January 4, confirmed its final day of business will be Thursday, January 8.

A 50% discount sale will continue until then. The store opened in 2016 with the Australian brand offering a range of quirky goods including pens, pencil cases, headphones, gadgets and notebooks.

An official reason for the closure has not been provided but it is the latest blow to the town’s high street which has seen the likes of Next, Millets and Bodycare shutting over the past few years. It’s not yet known which business will take over the Smiggle unit.

It’s not all bad news, with a new B&M set to open beside the Smiggle store. As reported, a new store “coming soon” sign was erected in the shopping centre at the former One Beyond shop, which is understood to have closed in November having opened near Superdrug in 2022.
