The first photos have emerged from the aftermath of a blaze near Sheffield’s Meadowhall that shrouded the shopping mall in plumes of smoke.
The blaze broke out early yesterday evening (January 2) near the Meadowhall area in Sheffield. The first reports emerged around 6pm after the blaze was captured on weather camera footage. Witnesses quickly took to social media to report “strong-smelling smoke”.
South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service confirmed the fire was located at an industrial unit on Meadowhall Road. While the fire was initially spotted on an embankment overlooking the area, officials clarified it was contained to an industrial site.
Witness @craig_sheff_9 posted images to X showing the scale of the incident – describing the blaze as a “Large fire next to Meadowhall Sheffield,”.
The latest update from South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service, posted this morning, was shared on the service’s Facebook page.
A spokesperson said: “Last night’s fire near Meadowhall is now out and Meadowhall Road has reopened. We still have one fire engine in attendance, damping down. An investigation into the cause of the fire will begin later this morning. Well done to all our staff for their response to this incident, on another busy night for the service.”
