Preparations are on in full swing for the flower, vegetable, and fruit exhibition scheduled to be held in Karaikal from January 16, with the Agriculture Department stepping up arrangements in coordination with the district administration.
This year, the flower show will be held as part of a larger carnival. While the flower exhibition will be organised by the Agriculture Department from January 16 to 18, the carnival will be jointly hosted by the Tourism Department and the district administration during the same period.
As part of the carnival, a range of events, including cultural programmes, sports competitions, a marathon, rekhla race, boat race, dog show, food festival, and road shows have been planned. Officials said arrangements for these events were progressing steadily.
The Agriculture Department has been working to promote horticultural interest among residents through training programmes conducted at various levels by the department and the Krishi Vigyan Kendra. As a result, several residents have taken up kitchen gardening and small-scale horticulture in their homes and gardens. Many of them are now preparing to showcase their produce at the exhibition.
The Agriculture Department and the Krishi Vigyan Kendra are readying their own displays for the event.
Karaikal Additional Director of Agriculture Ganesan said that a wide variety of flowering plants had been raised at the department’s nursery and were being prepared for display at the exhibition. “In addition, arrangements have been made to source popular plant varieties from Bengaluru and other places to attract visitors,” he said and added that the preparations were being carried out intensively with the support of the district administration.
