Terrier Barney had been on the run in Barnsley for over three weeks
A rescue team recalled the “beautiful” moment they reunited a family with their dog, who had been on the run for three weeks in South Yorkshire, following his owner’s death.
Volunteer for the pet search-and-rescue team, Hartsar and K9RSQ, Erica Hart, explained how terrier Barney had “made a break for it” after a disorienting few months.
Erica said: “The family told me that Barney’s original owner in Chesterfield had tragically died of cancer. After being rehomed to the owner’s son, he was eventually taken back to his breeder in Barnsley. I think the move must have confused him.”
Barney made his grand escape over three weeks before New Year’s Eve, and the team grew worried with each passing day that he would spook at the sound of fireworks.
Erica said: “We searched for him extensively because dogs can die from shock at the sound of the loud bangs.”
Using her drone, Erica assisted in finally tracking down Barney, who had been spotted in a field in Barnsley.
Barney was spotted using a drone
Erica, who captured the touching moment Barney ran “crying” into the arms of his original owners’ daughter, said: “After three and a half weeks of running round Pogmoor and half of Barnsley, his little marathon was over – just before the fireworks started.”
Barney has since been taken home by his owner’s daughter.
