It’s very icy on the roads this morning
As we get into the swing of the New Year here in Cork, those heading out and about this weekend will want to wrap up tight as a bitter chill falls over the Rebel County, with Met Éireann warning of sub-zero temperatures and icy roads.
Temperatures in Cork city this morning are barely above freezing and are expected to gradually rise throughout the afternoon, reaching a peak of 5°C by lunchtime. Temperatures will slowly begin to drop after 5 pm, once again reaching freezing by the late evening.
It’s colder in both North and West Cork, with temperatures in Skibbereen reaching lows of -4°C this morning, and in Fermoy, temperatures are expected to plummet to -5°C overnight. A Status Yellow ice warning issued by Met Éireann comes into effect at 6 pm this evening, with the national forecaster urging motorists to drive carefully along potentially dangerous roads. The warning remains valid until late tomorrow morning.
While it’s going to be a very cold weekend, it’ll thankfully be a dry one as well, with Met Éireann predicting little to no rainfall across the county over the next few days. There’s a chance of scattered showers in some areas, but these should pass quickly if they occur at all.
The national forecaster has also issued a snow warning for several counties, with Cavan, Donegal, Monaghan, Louth and all of Connacht expecting to see some snowfall overnight. It remains to be seen if we’ll get any snow down south, and we’ll be keeping a close eye on the latest weather updates across the weekend.
