All the planned road closures and roadworks for week beginning Monday, January 5

A round-up of roadworks and closures taking place in the North East this week(Image: Nottingham Post)

There are a number of road closures in place across the North East this week that drivers should be aware of. Some roads are closed while others have lane closures.

Temporary traffic measures or diversion routes may also be in place on roads in the region. Motorists are urged to make allowances for these closures and alter their travel arrangements if necessary.

Newcastle

• Lane closed and speed restriction of 30 mph due to roadworks and contraflow on A167 Tyne Bridge in both directions from A167(M, Newcastle Upon Tyne) to Church Street (Gateshead). Expect delays. Until 0:59 on 16th June 2028.
• Ilford Road in both directions closed due to water main work from Lodore Road to Moorfield.Until 6th January.
• Traffic taking turns due to water main work on Rectory Terrace in both directions around Stoneyhurst Road West. Until 7th January 2026.

• One lane closed due to gas main work on A167 Stamfordham Road at A191 Springfield Road. On the roundabout. Until 5th February 2026.

• Temporary traffic lights due to roadworks on A1056 in both directions from The A189 (Camperdown Industrial Estate) to B1318 Great North Road (North Gosforth). Until 11th January 2026.
• Temporary traffic lights due to gas main work on B6528 Hexham Road in both directions at Woodside Avenue. Until 5th February 2026.
• Market Street One Way Street closed due to roadworks from Pilgrim Street to Carliol Street. Until 9th October 2026.
• Pilgrim Street Southbound closed due to roadworks from New Bridge Street West to Swan House Roundabout. Until 9th October 2026.
• Whitehouse Road in both directions closed due to roadworks between Armstrong Road and Walwick Fell. Until 11:57 on 17th July 2026.
• Worswick Street One Way Street closed due to roadworks from Pilgrim Street to Carliol Square. Until 0:59 on 10th April 2027.

Gateshead

• A167 Gateshead Highway in both directions closed due to major works to demolish the flyover between B1426 High Street West and A184 Park Lane. Until 17th May 2026.
• Lane closed due to roadworks on A184 Westbound from A195 Lingey Lane to Grange Road. Expect delays.
• Lane one (of two). Until 13th March 2026.
• Temporary traffic lights due to water main work on B6315 Collingdon Road in both directions at Collingdon Green. Expect delays. Until 5th January 2026.
• Temporary traffic lights due to roadworks on Dunston Bank in both directions at Park Avenue. Until 20th January 2026.
• Temporary traffic lights due to roadworks on Mill Road in both directions between Whinney Leas and Moorland View. Until 16th January 2026.

County Durham

• Speed restriction of 50 mph and narrow lanes due to resurfacing work and long-term roadworks on A1(M) in both directions between J61 A688 Tursdale Road (Bowburn) and J62 A690 (Carrville). Expect delays. Until 1st February 2026
• Narrow lanes on Framwelgate Waterside in both directions from Sidegate to Millburngate.Until 31st December 2027.
• A1(M) Northbound closed due to roadworks during the night from J61 A688 Tursdale Road (Bowburn) to J63 A167 (Chester-Le-Street). From 8pm on the 5th to 6pm on 6th January.
• Temporary traffic lights due to water main work on Butsfield Lane in both directions at Knitsley Nook. Until 7th January 2026.
• Temporary traffic lights due to roadworks on B1279 Hartlepool Street in both directions at Henry Street. Expect delays. Until 0:00 on 22nd June 2026.
• Temporary traffic lights due to water main work on Sandypath Lane in both directions at B6314 Busty Bank.Until 8th January.
• Temporary traffic lights due to electricity work on B6295 in both directions between Allenheads (High Copthill) and the A689 (Cowshill). Until 27th February 2026.
• Temporary traffic lights due to water main work on B6311 in both directions at B6173. Until 10th February 2026.
• Temporary traffic lights due to gas main work on B6313 Front Street in both directions at B6532 Middles Road. Until 17:00 on 20th February 2026.
• Narrow lanes on Framwelgate Waterside in both directions from Sidegate to Millburngate. Until 31st December 2027.

Northumberland

• Dogger Bank in both directions closed due to roadworks between St Leonards Lane (Spital Hill) and A192 Newgate Street (Morpeth). Until 17:00 on 29th April 2026.
• Temporary traffic lights due to emergency repairs and gas main work on The B1326 in both directions from Helen Street to the A189. Expect delays. Until 7th January 2026.
• Traffic taking turns due to water main work on A192 Castle Square in both directions at Goose Hill. Until 5th January 2026.
• Temporary traffic lights due to electricity work on B1523 Newcastle Road in both directions at Cramlington Terrace. Until 30th December.
• Temporary traffic lights due to gas main work on B6323 Ponteland Road in both directions at Birks Road. Until 18th March 2026.
• Traffic taking turns due to gas main work on Millfield Terrace in both directions at Park Avenue. Until 27th January 2026.

North Tyneside

• One lane closed due to gas main work on A192 Preston North Road Northbound from Hartburn Road (Morrisons) to Malvern Road. Until 16th January 2026.
• Temporary traffic lights due to emergency repairs and gas main work on A187 Howdon Road in both directions between Earl Grey Way and George Stephenson Way. Until 13th January.
• One lane closed due to junction improvements on A192 Preston North Road Northbound from A1058 Beach Road to Hartburn Road (Morrisons). Upgrading the footpath and crossings. Until 15:30 on 10th November 2026.
• Temporary traffic lights due to gas main work on A193 Tynemouth Road in both directions between Ridley Avenue and B1315 Churchill Street. Until 2nd March 2026.
• Temporary traffic lights due to roadworks on B1317 Killingworth Lane in both directions near Simonside Way. Until 22nd September 2027.
• Traffic taking turns due to electricity work on Hascombe Close in both directions at Wellfield. Until 5th January 2026.
• Traffic taking turns due to electricity work on Taylor Avenue in both directions at Wideopen. Until 5th January 2026.

South Tyneside

• Temporary traffic lights due to roadworks on A1018 Sunderland Road in both directions at Grosvenor Mews. Until 9th January 2026.
• Traffic taking turns due to electricity work on Beacon Glade in both directions at Valley Lane. Until 8th January.
• Traffic taking turns due to electricity work on Beach Road in both directions at Eastbourne Grove. Until 16th January 2026.
• Traffic taking turns due to electricity work on Belgrave Terrace in both directions between Broughton Road and Beach Road. Until 21st January 2026.
• One lane closed due to roadworks on East Stainton Street in both directions at A1018 Imeary Street. Until 17:00 on 20th February 2026.
• Temporary traffic lights due to water main work on Lizard Lane in both directions at Cornthwaite Drive. Until 6th January 2026.
• Traffic taking turns due to electricity work on Park Road in both directions at Canning Street. Until 5th January 2026.

Sunderland

• Easington Street in both directions closed due to roadworks from Wilson Street North to Hay Street. Until 0:00 on 13th April 2027.
• Traffic taking turns due to electricity work on Somerset Road in both directions at Simonside Road. Until 8th January.
• Mowbray Road in both directions closed due to roadworks between Salem Street South and Suffolk Street. Until 31st December.
• Traffic taking turns due to electricity work on Raby Road in both directions at Ayton Road. Until 8th January.
• Temporary traffic lights due to water main work on Paddock Lane in both directions at Tunstall Village Lane. Until 7th January.
• Traffic taking turns due to water main work on Clifton Road in both directions between Claremont Road and Stanhope Road. Until 5th January.
• Easington Street in both directions closed due to roadworks between Wilson Street North and Hay Street. Until 9th January 2029.
• Traffic taking turns due to electricity work on Gartland Road in both directions at Gleneagles Road. Until 2nd January 2026.
• Traffic taking turns due to electricity work on Park Chare in both directions at Parkway. Until 5th January 2026.
