Hull City say they understand the frustration of supporters after Sunday’s Championship meeting with Watford was postponed shortly before kick-off.

Both teams were out on the MKM Stadium pitch warming up when news emerged that referee Anthony Backhouse had called the game off, over concerns about the safety of the players.

While the pitch was deemed playable, the immediate areas around the pitch were still icy after freezing temperatures in East Yorkshire.

Ground staff had been using the pitch lamps and other methods in a bid to thaw out the areas of concern, but after various inspections, the game was called off with an official announcement coming on social media at 2:42pm, before the crowd assembled inside the ground were then informed.

“Hull City’s Sky Bet Championship match against Watford was postponed due to player safety concerns,” the club said in a statement on Sunday afternoon

“While the pitch was playable and had been passed by the referee, areas immediately surrounding the playing surface were deemed unsafe and the decision to postpone the game was agreed by all parties.

“Despite the continued efforts of the operations and grounds teams to clear the affected areas, conditions failed to improve, and with temperatures continuing to fall, player safety could not be guaranteed.

“We fully understand the frustration of supporters regarding the timing of the decision. Every effort was made to fulfil the fixture, and we sincerely apologise for the inconvenience and disappointment caused.

“A new date will be announced in due course and match tickets will remain valid for the rearranged fixture. Further communication will follow to match ticket holders and hospitality guests.”

Watford, meanwhile, highlighted their annoyance at the game being struck off so close to the original 3pm start time.

“While player safety is paramount, we are really disappointed the game has been postponed as we were ready to play,” the Hornets said.

“The decision to postpone the fixture so close to kick-off is regrettable and we fully share the frustration of our supporters.”
