LIVE: Traffic, travel and weather as temps plunge to -5C with icy start for Munster

Good morning, Cork – it’s a cold one! Temps fell to as low as -5C in some parts of Munster overnight and we are off to a very cold and icy January 5th, as many head back to school and work.

Some schools in Cork city and elsewhere in Munster were using Whatsapp and email to tell parents last niight that there would be a delayed return to the classroom, with a mid-morning start to allow parents to avoid the worst of the ice and frost.

At 7am this morning, there were no major traffic or travel alerts – with Irish Rail, Cork Airport and Transport Infrasture Ireland reporting no significant incidents.

However, that could change over this morning and we will have live updates as we go through this Monday morning – hopefully all can stay safe and the advice is to take it very easy on the roads out there as ice will be an issue.

Meanwhile, the latest forecast for Munster looks like:

TODAY – Monday 5th January

Very cold to begin today, with frost and icy stretches on untreated surfaces slow to clear. Patches of freezing fog and some lying snow in places too. Dry and sunny for most, with showers confined to coastal fringes. Highest temperatures of only 1 to 5 degrees in light to moderate northwest to west winds.

TONIGHT

Cold, dry and clear for most at first tonight. Widespread frost and icy stretches will form early on along with patches of mist and fog. Cloud will build from the west overnight, raising temperatures slightly, and outbreaks of rain or sleet will reach Atlantic coastal areas by morning. Lowest temperatures of -3 to +2 degrees, coldest early on, with light to moderate westerly winds backing southwesterly by morning.

TOMORROW – Tuesday 6th January

Cloudy with outbreaks of rain and drizzle moving eastwards through the morning and early afternoon, followed by sunny spells and scattered showers. Highest temperatures of 4 to 8 degrees with mostly moderate southwesterly winds veering northwesterly in the evening.
