The location of a fire at Queen’s Medical Centre’s emergency department has been revealed.

Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service crews were called to the hospital just before 8.30pm on Friday, January 2.

Firefighters from five fire stations attended the incident as the hospital advised people not to attend until the issue was resolved.

The fire service has now confirmed the location of the fire. A spokesperson said: “A fire was located in the structural void and was extinguished using one hose reel jet.

“Once extinguished, crews revisited the site periodically throughout the night to reinspect and ensure no further heat sources were present.”

In a hospital, a structural void typically refers to an empty space intentionally designed into the building’s infrastructure to accommodate complex systems.

QMC confirmed the incident was resolved at 1.15am but explained that, while its emergency department is now back to being fully operational, it remained “exceptionally busy”.

A number of patients were moved out of A&E while the fire was being extinguished, while East Midlands Ambulance Service held ambulance handovers.

A statement from Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust (NUH), which runs QMC, reads: “We are hugely grateful to our NUH colleagues, and our partners at Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue and EMAS for their swift and professional response to help maintain safety for all of our patients, staff and visitors.”
