One of London’s best bakeries is opening an ‘exciting’ flagship location months after being forced to shut their popular shop. SUBA will launch on Spitalfields’ Commercial Street on Monday, January 5 with a wide range of pastries, bread and hot drinks.
Owner Pa Modou mysteriously shut the original Walthamstow branch in May before quietly reopening in Hackney months later. The 33-year-old has since returned to Waltham Forest and is now continuing to expand into East London.
Announcing the news on Instagram, he said: “Four months ago, we had to start from scratch again. It’s been nothing but hard work, and we truly appreciate all the support.

“We are very grateful and excited to announce our third shop in Spitalfields, opening on the 5th of January. We’re really looking forward to welcoming more people to our baked goods and speciality coffee.”
Fans can expect much of the same flaky, buttery goodness, with an ever-changing menu of baguettes, loaves, buns and sandwiches available six days a week.
SUBA found a large following across the capital after welcoming customers in late-2023, thanks to a winning combination of French classics and unique West African-inspired flavours. It has since been lauded with praise from food guides The Infatuation, The Good Food Guide and TopJaw.
Elsewhere, acclaimed gluten free bakery Copains has swapped Paris for Covent Garden with their its London branch. The chain also plans to expand to Islington in 2026.
