A man has died following a crash Friday night in Brunswick, Maine.
Police responded to the motor vehicle crash on Route 1 near the Route 196 ramp around 7:30 p.m. where 47-year-old Shannon MacGregor, of Woolwich, was pronounced dead on scene.
An investigation determined MacGregor was driving a Dodge Journey on the Route 106 offramp towards Route 1 northbound when the SUV failed to maintain its lane as it went over the bridge, police said. The vehicle went up an icy embankment, over the barrier and fell to the ground below, fatally injuring MacGregor.
A dog inside the SUV was also injured and was taken to emergency veterinary services, according to police. The animal is expected to make a full recovery.
The Route 1 onramp was completely closed following the crash for several hours, and northbound Route 1 was open to just one lane during that time, according to New Brunswick police, who were assisted on scene by Topsham police, Freeport police, the Sagadahoc County Sheriff’s Office, the Brunswick Fire Department, and the Maine Department of Transportation.
It wasn’t immediately clear what caused the crash. An investigation by the Brunswick Police Department is ongoing.
