Man charged on suspicion of stealing car in Accrington after police dog search

A man has been arrested after a car was reportedly stolen from Accrington.

Police were called to Blackburn Road at 7.15pm on Saturday night (January 3) after a black Seat Leon was stolen. Officers from the roads policing unit and Hyndburn’s neighbourhood police team attended the scene shortly afterwards.

The vehicle was later found on Haworth Street in Oswaldtwistle. A police dog handler located a suspect nearby and a man was arrested on suspicion of taking a vehicle without consent.

Police have now confirmed that Scott Melia, 43, of Burnley Road in Accrington, has since been charged with taking a motor vehicle without the owner’s consent, driving a motor vehicle otherwise than in accordance with a licence and using a motor vehicle on a road/public place without third party insurance. He has been remanded into custody to appear at Blackburn Magistrates’ Court on Monday (January 5).

Hyndburn Police posted on Facebook: “Yesterday at around 7.15pm, a black Seat Leon was stolen from Blackburn Road in Accrington.

“Hyndburn Neighbourhood Policing Team, alongside Lancs Police Specialist Ops and colleagues from Immediate Response, attended the area swiftly.

“The stolen vehicle was located on Haworth Street in Oswaldtwistle and a dog handler tracked the offender to Union Road, where a 43-year-old male was arrested on suspicion of taking a motor vehicle without the owners consent (TWOC).

“Scott Melia, of Burnley Road, Accrington, has since been charged with taking a motor vehicle without the owners consent, driving a motor vehicle otherwise than in accordance with a licence and using a motor vehicle on a road / public place without third party insurance. He has been remanded into custody to appear at Blackburn Magistrates’ Court on Monday, 5 January 2026.
