The Met Office has issued two fresh yellow weather warnings for snow and ice across parts of the North East. A warning for ice will be in effect for coastal areas from midnight on Saturday through to midday on Sunday.

Following this, a second yellow weather warning for both snow and ice has been put in place from midnight on Sunday until midnight on Monday. The alert encompasses areas of the North East including Middlesbrough, Hartlepool, Darlington, Redcar and Cleveland and Stockton.

Residents are being cautioned that the incoming weather conditions may cause travel disruption over the coming days, affecting both road users and those relying on public transport.

Regarding Monday’s warning, the Met Office stated: “Whilst not all areas will be affected, scattered snow showers will move inland from the North Sea during Monday, giving some small accumulations in places.

“Where snow showers are most frequent, this most likely across parts of North and East Yorkshire and Redcar and Cleveland, fresh accumulations of 5-8 cm will be possible in a few places.”, reports Chronicle Live.

“Lightning and gusty winds may be additional hazards, especially near windward coasts.”

Forecasters have also cautioned that Saturday’s snowfall could thaw and subsequently refreeze, creating icy patches and treacherous driving conditions on Saturday night and into Sunday morning.

This follows recent snowfall in parts of the North East due to an Arctic blast, which is expected to bring sub-zero temperatures for the majority of the week.

What to expect

  • Some roads and railways likely to be affected with longer journey times by road, bus and train services
  • Some injuries from slips and falls on icy surfaces
  • Probably some icy patches on some untreated roads, pavements and cycle paths
