Snow is set to hit Leicestershire with the Met Office issuing a yellow weather warning. Forecasters say travel disruption is expected as wintry showers move across the county from Sunday evening (January 4).

The warning, which covers Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland, will be in place from 8pm tonight (Sunday, January 4) until 11am on Monday (January 5). The Met Office said ice is likely to form on untreated surfaces as temperatures drop.

A band of snow showers is expected to move south during Sunday evening and into the early hours of Monday, giving a covering of 1-3 cm of snow in places. Further snow showers are likely across eastern England during Monday morning.

Snow and ice has the potential to cause disruption to travel during the weekend and into Monday morning.

The Met Office said some roads and railways are likely to be affected with longer journey times by road, bus and train services. The warning indicates there will probably be some icy patches on untreated roads, pavements and cycle paths.

Forecasters added that some injuries from slips and falls on icy surfaces are possible. The Met Office has classified the warning as having a “likely” probability with a “low” impact across the affected regions.

Drivers are being urged to prepare for potential disruption by gathering essential items including warm clothing, food, water and a blanket. The Met Office advises motorists to pack emergency supplies including a torch, ice scraper, de-icer, a warning triangle, high visibility vest and an in-car phone charger.
