A new escalator has been delivered to Cutty Sark DLR Station which has been closed since May. The station is set to remain shut due to works to replace faulty escalators until at least Spring this year.

There have been service issues with the Cutty Sark escalators dating back to around 2021. The escalators had become increasingly unreliable, until Transport for London decided to take them out of service as they were to complex to repair.

Photographs show crews from Quattro Plant delivery the new escalators to the Cutty Sark DLR platform. All four of the escalators at the station are set to be replaced with new state-of-the-art machines which are more energy efficient.

Greenwich locals dubbed the station a “mess” after the faulty escalators caused issues at the station for years. Marcus Roberts, 23, previously told the Local Democracy Reporting Service (LDRS): “You see everything here; bikes, scooters, wheelchairs. There’s an elevator but you see lines of people queuing for a long time.”

Ben Grellier, TfL’s Head of Operations for the DLR, said: “We know Cutty Sark’s escalators have been causing disruption and frustration for our customers and we would like to thank them for their patience during this period.”

He added: “We apologise for any further disruption the station closure may cause, but it is not possible to replace these escalators with the station in operation. Once installed, the new state-of-the-art escalators will provide customers with reliable and easier access to DLR services at the station.”

There are several alternative travel routes for people who would normally use the Cutty Sark DLR Station. These include the nearby Greenwich Station, local bus routes 129 and 199, riverboat services RB1 and RB6 and the Greenwich foot tunnel.
