Two men have been arrested after an incident at a popular pub in South Essex. Police officers rushed to the Hoy and Helmet pub in Benfleet shortly after 11pm on Saturday night (January 4).

It was reported that there was a disturbance at the Greene King venue in the town’s High Street. Two men from Canvey Island were arrested at the scene. A spokesperson for the pub said the incident had taken place away from the premises.

The first was arrested on suspicion of criminal damage, a public order offence and assaulting an emergency worker. The second man was arrested on suspicion of assaulting an emergency worker. A spokesman for Essex Police confirmed both men remain in custody.

An Essex Police spokesperson said: “We responded to a disturbance reported at a venue in High Street, Benfleet, shortly after 11pm on Saturday 4 January. Once there, two men from Canvey Island were arrested.

“The first was arrested on suspicion of criminal damage, a public order offence and assaulting an emergency worker. The second man was arrested on suspicion of assaulting an emergency worker. Both men remain in custody. “

A spokesperson for the Hoy & Helmet said: “We will not tolerate any antisocial behaviour and the pub team acted swiftly on Saturday night. The safety of our customers and team is paramount. We are fully supporting the police investigation.”
