The Coimbatore Corporation has proposed an alternative site to establish a garbage transfer station after objections were raised by the public to the project at Kovaipudur.
Under the Swachh Bharat Mission 2.0, the Corporation had planned to construct a plant with a capacity of 200 tonnes a day at Q-Block in Kovaipudur at ₹9 crore. After completing the tender process, a work order was issued to the contractor, and preliminary work on the project began in March 2025.
People and representatives of resident welfare associations in the area opposed the proposed facility. They pointed out that a micro composting centre was functioning nearby and the locality was predominantly residential. They raised concerns that the proposed facility could lead to odour issues and pose health risks to the public, including children.
In response to the objections, senior officials of the Corporation conducted an inspection at the Kovaipudur site. During the inspection, the objections raised by the public were reiterated.
Following this, the civic body proposed shifting the garbage transfer station to Sugunapuram West, with the project to be executed by the same contractor.
