You can see as far as the Snowdonian mountains
The view from Rivington looking towards the reservoirs
If you’re looking for the perfect winter’s day walk Rivington Pike could be the place for you. Walkers can maximise the clear skies forecast this weekend with a trek up to Rivington Pike which offers stunning views across the surrounding countryside.
When the conditions are right you can even see as far as the Snowdonian mountains, the Manchester Evening News reports.
The rural location is known for its beautiful walks with reservoirs that were once compared to the Lake District, rugged moorland and magical follies, including a ruined castle.
Where to go
Start your walk by exploring Rivington Terraced Gardens, which cover an area of 45 acres. The brainchild of Lord Leverhulme, he created a garden full of follies, lakes and buildings but construction stopped when he died, and many of the structures remained unfinished.
Abandoned for many years, a conservation project is now underway by Rivington Heritage Trust to maintain the gardens. But the result of the years of abandonment is a place which feels like a fairytale.

Take your time exploring the different features, from the Italian Lake to the Japanese Gardens. Just be careful on some of the paths as they can be slippery in icy weather.
After exploring the gardens, keep climbing until you reach the magnificent Pigeon Tower, a gift from Lord Leverhulme for his wife. From here head to Rivington Pike and take in the incredible views.
Then descend back down through the gardens, and head to one of Rivington’s welcoming cafes and tearooms for a warming drink and a well-deserved treat to round off your walk.
