It’s a place known for its plentiful and budget friendly roast dinners, but a popular branch of Sambuca in the North East stayed shut on Sunday. And the decision was made due to treacherous conditions outside the restaurant, which left the road and path ‘like an ice rink’ as customers were told to stay away.

When it comes to restaurants to go for a hearty meal that won’t break the bank, Sambucas are many people’s go-to, whether its the stunningly transformed one on Newcastle Quayside, the one at the Metro Centre, Forest Hall, Fish Quay, or the many others dotted all over the region. But one that stayed closed on what usually have been one of its busiest days of the week was the one by the river in Sunderland.

Taking to Facebook on Sunday morning, hours before they were due to open, staff revealed they’d taken the decision to stay shut and, one look at the two photos they shared of Low Street, the road where the restaurant is based and it was easy to see why they’d decided to close in the interests of everyone’s safety.

The street looked to have had absolutely no grit on it at all, as the accompanying post from Sambuca read: ‘The state of Low street, down the fish quay it’s horrendous, shiny like an ice rink. There’s been no grit spread on our street, just on the top road, the main one. We are not able to open, the conditions are hazardous. Please please keep away as it’s too dangerous to drive down here.’

It didn’t take long for comments to pour in on the post, including one regular who replied: ‘I’d be terrified to drive down there’ and another who wrote: ‘wow only way to go down that is with ice skates.’ Sambuca then returned to the comments thread to add: ‘we appreciate the responses to this post. But just to clarify, we do not blame the council for the street not having grit spread on it. We made the post to make you aware that even though the main road it’s safe to use, once you reach the Low Street bank, it’s extremely dangerous down here. ‘

They ended by adding: ‘We’ll make sure we’re properly prepared for the next freezing temperatures. Meanwhile, keep safe and off the roads if you can.’
