Footage has emerged of a person walking close to huge freezing waves in a Yorkshire seaside town – just 24 hours after two people lost their lives in the Withernsea tragedy. One person remains missing after a tireless search in treacherous weather was called off on Saturday afternoon.

An image taken from Whitby Yacht Club’s CCTV footage shows a person in a green hooded coat perilously edging closer along the lifeboat and yacht ramp to the crashing water below. The image shows huge waves battering the harbour wall in the distance while the person edges closer to the water, appearing to tread carefully down a slippery ramp, reports Yorkshire Live.

One comment read: “Two have died and one missing in Withernsea – and people still do this?” Lynn said: “Have they not seen the news?”

Heather said: “And someone will be expected to save them from their own stupidity.” Another said: “Madness. I’ve been watching them on the live stream. Pretty dangerous where they are.”

Two people – including a 67-year-old man – were recovered from the freezing water by search and rescue teams on Friday. The man was unconscious but sadly died later. The other person had already died – no details have been officially released about them, nor about the person who remains missing.

The alarm was raised just after 3pm on Friday, when according to eyewitnesses, a girl was knocked off the steps at Pier Towers by a huge wave and into the sea. The others are believed to have been trying to rescue her, but this has not been officially confirmed by authorities.

The search for the third person continued on Saturday in snow and freezing conditions but was called off around 24 hours after the alarm was first raised. Flowers have been placed at the scene and the local community – described by residents as a ‘town in mourning’ rallied together to support those involved in the rescue.
