Snow-hit North Staffordshire roads could be gritted three times tonight. Staffordshire County Council has deployed its gritters as snow continues to fall.

It comes as there have been reports of vehicles becoming stranded on the A34 through Newcastle.

North Staffordshire today remains in the grip of a 21-hour yellow weather warning for snow and ice. The Met Office warning ends at midday on Monday 5 January.

A county council spokesman said: “Our gritting crews will be working hard again tonight to keep roads as safe as possible. All primary routes will be gritted twice, and all secondary routes will also be treated. With 5–6cm of snow possible across northern parts of the county, routes in the north will be treated twice as a priority and closely monitored for a potential third run, depending on snowfall and road conditions. Crews will also be ready to head back out again from 4am if required. Please take extra care when travelling, only make necessary journeys and drive to the conditions. Stay safe, Staffordshire.”
