Snow in Scotland LIVE as schools close and trains cancelled amid ‘blizzard conditions’

Highland Council issues update on road-clearing operation

The Highland Council has issued an update to residents as the snow continues to fall across the north of Scotland.

The authority said their roads team are working throughout the “challenging” conditions, with Easter Ross, Caithness, and Sutherland the worst-affected areas.

They are hoping to keep the primary routes open despite the wild winter weather, but have urged people not to travel “unless it’s absolutely necessary”.

Posting about their operation on X, formerly Twitter, the Highland Council said: “Strong winds and snow showers continue to cause challenges for our roads team – as soon as we clear some roads, the snow is blowing back in. The worst conditions continue to be in Easter Ross, Caithness, and Sutherland.

“Our focus is on keeping primary routes across the Highland Council region open. The conditions are changing rapidly, so please do not travel unless it’s absolutely necessary as some secondary routes and local roads may quickly become impassable.

“If you do have to travel, check road closures and plan ahead as much as possible as alternative routes aren’t always available.”
