Class 10 students from Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts — which consistently secured the top two positions in SSLC examination performance over the past two years — are preparing for the first of three State-level Secondary School Leaving Certificate (SSLC) preparatory examinations, organised by the Karnataka School Examination and Assessment Board (KSEAB). The preparatory examinations will commence on January 5.

The first SSLC preparatory examination will be held between January 5 and January 10, the second between January 27 and February 2 and the third between February 23 and February 28.

The three examinations are the culmination of the year-long ‘Mission 45’ programme initiated by the Education Department and aimed at improving the performance of students in the SSLC examinations scheduled for March 18 to April 2 and to ensure that no Class 10 student is left behind. Answers will be graded immediately, and marks will be uploaded to the Students’ Achievements Tracking System for analysis and to assist slow learners before the main exam.

Over 25,000 fresh students from Dakshina Kannada and over 13,000 from Udupi will take the SSLC-1 examination this year. In 2025, Dakshina Kannada ranked first, followed by Udupi and Uttara Kannada. In 2024, Udupi topped the rankings, with Dakshina Kannada and Shivamogga in second and third place, respectively.

As part of the programme, the KSEAB has made available an extensive question bank for each of the six subjects in the students’ section of its website, along with model question papers and corresponding answers.

Dakshina Kannada Deputy Director of Public Instruction G. Shashidhar said a document containing a set of most likely questions was sent to teachers responsible for handling identified slow learners. These selected students were encouraged to answer these questions, he said.

2nd PU preparatory exams begin

Meanwhile, the first of the two State-level preparatory examinations for PU students has begun. The first preparatory examination began on January 2 and will run until January 17. While participation in both examinations is mandatory for students enrolled in Government PU Colleges, aided and unaided institutions have been advised to administer the first examination and to conduct the second only if deemed necessary.

Some unaided colleges in Dakshina Kannada did not conduct exams on January 2 morning. After complaints from students and parents, the department direted these colleges to conduct the first examination on January 2 afternoon.
