It’s a place that, to be honest, needs no introduction, thanks to its storybook streets, proud history and storybook streets that have welcomed many locals and tourists. And a famous city in the North East might want to brace itself for even more visitors in 2026, after being championed on a Facebook page with tens of thousands of followers.
If there’s one drum we’ll keep banging every single year it’s just how amazing our region is and, over the last 12 months, it’s earned more interest and acclaim further afield as well, on both a national and international level. And a location that most definitely is up there with the best of the best when it comes to places to visit in the North East is Durham.
The city steeped in history with a postcard perfect sights to see and iconic landmarks like the Cathedral, saw plenty of footfall over Christmas and New Year, after its Christmas Market was once again held up as one of the best ‘hidden gem’ ones in the UK to check out, for both food and drink and interesting gifts.

Whether you’re in Durham city centre itself or down by the riverside, which has undergone substantial development over the last few years, you can’t help but be captivated by your surroundings and a photo of a river walk in Durham, taken in autumn, when the route was like a blanket of colourful and crunchy leaves, has been shared on Secret Britain – a Facebook page that describes itself as the ‘ultimate digital guide to Great Britain.’
The post, using the photo, read: ‘How lovely would it be to take an evening stroll through Durham along this enchanting path — crisp autumn leaves crunching underfoot.’ Comments quickly flooded in, with one of the page’s followers replying: ‘Would love to do this’ and another simply reacting: ‘Beautiful.’
