Three sentenced to life imprisonment for murder in Mayiladuthurai

A district sessions court in Mayiladuthurai on Saturday sentenced three men, including a history-sheeter, to life imprisonment in connection with a murder.

According to the prosecution, the crime was committed on May 7, 2020, at Thiruvalluvarpuram, Arangarai Street, in Kuraimedu. A quarrel broke out between Rajendhiran, 26, and another resident of the same street, Dakshanamoorthy. During the altercation, Rajendhiran allegedly used obscene language and created a public disturbance. When Mariselvam, 36, a resident of the same locality, objected to his behaviour, Rajendhiran, along with his friends Sethu, 24, and Surya, 21, attacked Mariselvam with a knife, killing him on the spot.

Based on a complaint by Mariselvam’s wife, the Mayiladuthurai police registered a murder case against the three accused. The then Inspector of Police Singaravelu conducted the investigation, arrested the accused, and remanded them in judicial custody. A chargesheet was filed before the court.

The police said Surya had a history of repeated involvement in unlawful activities, following which he was classified as a history-sheeter and kept under surveillance.

After trial, Mayiladuthurai District Sessions Judge L.S. Sathiyamurthy found all the three accused guilty and sentenced them to life imprisonment on January 3. They were later lodged in the Central Prison, Cuddalore.
