Two people were rushed to hospital after a crash involving three vehicles shut the M60 in Greater Manchester on Sunday night (January 4). The clockwise carriageway was blocked by emergency crews following the incident near Whitefield.

Traffic was temporarily held on the clockwise carriageway between Junction 16 and Junction 17 near Prestwich, with drivers advised to find alternative routes. Cars could be seen damaged in the centre of the motorway, including what appeared to be a police car.

Congestion quickly built in the area with the motorway shut off for around an hour on Sunday night. The crash was reported shortly after 7pm.

Two people were taken to hospital, one of whom was checked over by trauma technicians from the fire service before being transported in an ambulance from the scene. The closure remained in place amid the emergency response before the motorway re-opened at around 8.10pm. Further details have not yet been confirmed by police.

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) said: “At just after 7pm today (Sunday 4 January), fire crews were called to reports of a road traffic collision on the M60 Clockwise between junctions 16 and 17. Two fire engines from Agecroft and Whitefield attended the incident involving three vehicles.

“A fire service trauma technician assessed one casualty, and this casualty, along with a further casualty have been conveyed to hospital by ambulance Firefighters used road traffic collision equipment, absorbent pads and lighting to make the scene safe and were on scene for approximately fifty-five minutes.”

Greater Manchester Police have been contacted for a statement.
