UK faces ’14 inch’ snow bomb sooner than expected with whole of England hit

The UK faces a staggering 812-mile snow storm this week – with the whole of England hit including the south and Greater London. Maps and charts from WX Charts, which uses Met Desk data, have turned purple and white.

On Tuesday, January 6, the maps show the whole of Scotland and northern England blanketed by snow. Snow depths are forecast to reach 5cm in these areas, whilst central Scotland is likely to see 1cm of snowfall an hour.

By 9pm tomorrow, snow looks set to cover the south coast of England too, as well as the Home Counties and capital city, London. Everywhere from the north of Scotland – including Wick, John O’Groats and the Cairngorms, to Brighton and the south will be hit.

Flurries could reach 5cm deep in northern England, with Northumberland, Cumbria, Durham and Westmorland and Cumberland among the counties most at risk.

By 6am on Wednesday, January 7, residents in the Scottish Highlands could see snow depths reach a gargantuan 36cm, or 14 inches.

A Met Office forecast for this week explains: “Many places will stay dry today with sunshine. Snow showers will continue across parts of Scotland, Northern Ireland and some coastal counties. Very cold with a bitter wind chill at times.

“Very cold tonight with a widespread frost and icy stretches. Staying dry and clear in the south, but cloudier in the north as a band of snow moves in.”

Looking at Tuesday, January 6, it adds: “Another cold day with a mixture of rain, sleet and snow across the north. Drier in the south with sunny skies, before rain, sleet and snow moves in this evening.”

And the outlook for Wednesday to Friday says: “Staying cold with frontal systems pushing in from the west. A mixture of rain, sleet and snow will move across the country at times with a risk of strong winds.”
