Hundreds of schools have already announced they are closing to protect students and parents from dangerous road conditions and icy pavements

Hundreds of schools across the UK will be closed tomorrow due to snow and freezing weather conditions.

Temperatures are expected to plummet further overnight with the mercury hovering around freezing across the UK. A raft of yellow and amber Met Office snow and ice weather warnings are in place currently and in the coming days.

Schools in Scotland, North Wales, Northern Ireland and Devon are among those shutting to protect students and parents from dangerous road conditions and icy pavements.

Met Office says ‘snow showers, ice and frost are expected at times’ this week

“As we begin the first full working week of the year, we face a range of winter weather hazards with snow showers and ice,” Met Office Chief Meteorologist Matthew Lehnert said.

“In the north of Scotland, snow showers are expected to become more frequent on Sunday night with some locations within the Amber warning areas seeing a further 20-30 cm accumulate by Monday morning,” he added.

“Elsewhere in the UK, snow showers, ice and frost are expected at times but milder air will make attempts to spread eastward from Tuesday. This will mean rain becomes more likely in the south, but there is also the possibility of more organised snow along the boundary of the mild and cold airmasses. Strong winds could also be a feature later in the week.”

The Met Office has shared five tips for staying safe in snowy conditions:

Drive safely in the snow
Think ahead and act now so you can cope if cut off
Stay safe if you are cut off

Warning from government to check on neighbours

As well as closing schools the extreme cold has prompted Dr Agostinho Sousa, the Head of Extreme Events and Health Protection at UKHSA, to warn Brits to keep an eye on vulnerable people around you.

He said: “As the colder weather sets in, it is vital to check in on friends, family and neighbours that are most vulnerable. The forecast temperatures can have a serious impact on the health of some people, leading to increased risk of heart attacks, strokes and chest infections, particularly for individuals over the age of 65 and those with pre-existing health conditions.”

Multiple snow and ice warnings in place across UK

The Met Office has issued an amber snow and ice alert and four yellow alerts.

The Amber alert, meaning travel delays and power cuts are likely, applies in North East Scotland – specifically Central Tayside and Fife, Grampian, Highlands and Eilean Siar and Orkney and Shetland. This is in place until 10am on Monday.

A yellow alert is in place until 11am on Monday in parts of the East Midlands, North West England, South West England, Wales and the West Midlands and until noon in parts of the East Midlands, East of England, London and South East of England, South West England, Wales, West Midlands, Yorkshire and Humber, and Northern Ireland.

A wider yellow alert is in place North and Central Scotland until midnight on Monday.

Ysgol Llangadog School – The school car park is currently covered in snow, with more snow forecast overnight and freezing conditions this will become treacherous. Staff have informed me of the difficulties in getting to work as they live in secluded areas. The walk way to the school is also very icy.
Parcyrhun County Primary School – Hazardous conditions leading up to school and school site.
Rhydaman (Community Primary School) – Car park dangerous with snow and ice.
Ysgol Gymraeg Teilo Sant – The roads leading to the school and the school site are covered in snow and are hazardous.
Tycroes School – Snow and ice conditions around the school site are unsafe. This was a designated INSET day but school will now also be closed to staff.
