UK set for another 37cm of snow within days as date ‘brought forward’

The UK faces yet another 37cm snow bomb within days of Monday and Tuesday’s flurries ending. Cold conditions bringing a range of wintry hazards are set to continue across the UK for the next few days.

A string of four Amber warnings for snow are in force across parts of the northern half of Scotland. These are complemented by a series of yellow warnings for snow and ice across many parts of the UK from Scotland and Northern Ireland to parts of Wales and England.

According to the latest weather maps from forecaster WX Charts, 37 cm snow will settle in Inverness by 9pm on Friday, January 9. London could see 8cm of snow and Manchester could be hit by 7cm.

It comes as the date of the next snow bomb is brought forward – from an initially projected January 14 or so – to January 9.

In Newcastle, there is expected to be 5cm of snow, while Glasgow is braced for 3cm. The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has issued amber cold health alerts for England until January 6.

Netweather TV’s Ian Simpson said: “It is currently forecast that a frontal system will push south-eastwards through the country next Tuesday/Wednesday bringing rain, sleet and snow.

“Unlike with the current showery regime, most of us will see precipitation from this, but it will be associated with a pool of less cold air, so more of us may end up seeing sleet or rain rather than snow.

“As is often the case when frontal systems slide south-eastwards into cold air, northern and eastern Scotland and eastern England look most likely to see falling and lying snow at modest elevations from the system, while further south and west, snow is more likely to be confined to high ground.”

Mr Simpson added: “After this, milder and wetter weather is expected to spread in from the south-west at times, but there are signs that it may not be a straightforward transition to milder weather, especially again in northern and eastern Britain.

“As our current northerly runs out of steam, blocking highs will develop to the north of Britain, with potential for these to extend to Scandinavia at times.

“The current northerlies will create a pool of cold air over central Europe and Scandinavia which has potential to head our way from the north-east at times, and this means that there is potential for further snowfalls, at least for a time, as fronts associated with depressions coming in off the North Atlantic push into this colder air.”
