UK snow maps show Yorkshire set for 23 inches as deep snow reaches Birmingham

Snow is forecast to pile up across the UK with Yorkshire Dales expecting up to 60cm (23 inches) while deep snow stretches as far south as Birmingham on January 15, according to Metdesk weather charts

The UK is bracing for a significant snowfall, with forecasts predicting that some areas could be buried under up to two feet of snow in the coming days.

Metdesk’s weather charts indicate a heavy accumulation of snow across high ground in England. The deepest drifts are expected over the Lake District and the Pennine Hills, as well as parts of Northern Wales.

By Thursday, 15 January, the snow is predicted to reach as far south as Birmingham, while parts of Yorkshire could see nearly two feet of snow.

The Yorkshire Dales National Park is forecasted to experience the deepest drifts, with up to 60 cm (more than 23 inches) expected around the Arkengarthdale area of North Yorkshire.

Looking further ahead, the Met Office’s long-range forecast from Tuesday, 8 January, to Saturday, 17 January, warns of “significant snow accumulations in places, particularly on northern hills”, reports the Mirror.

Currently, several parts of the UK are under Met Office Yellow snow and ice warnings, including south western England and western Wales, eastern England, Scotland, and Northern Ireland.

These warnings are set to continue until Tuesday, 6 January, with Britons advised to stay alert due to the hazardous conditions.

Dr Agostinho Sousa, Head of Extreme Events and Health Protection at UKHSA, has issued a warning as the colder weather approaches: “As the colder weather sets in, it is vital to check in on friends, family and neighbours that are most vulnerable.

“The forecast temperatures can have a serious impact on the health of some people, leading to increased risk of heart attacks, strokes and chest infections, particularly for individuals over the age of 65 and those with pre-existing health conditions.”

Scotland could see up to 40cm of snowfall in the coming days, accompanied by strong winds that could create temporary blizzard conditions. These severe weather conditions could result in travel disruptions, power outages, and even pose a “the potential risk to life and property”.

The Met Office’s forecast for Sunday includes: “Snow showers continuing to affect coastal regions, though pushing further inland across northwest England and Wales by the afternoon. Dry and sunny elsewhere, but feeling very cold in the wind.”

Looking ahead to Monday through Wednesday, the forecast warns of “remaining cold with snow showers easing slightly on Monday, with plenty of sunshine inland. Cloudier on Tuesday with a mix of rain, sleet and snow pushing eastwards into Wednesday”.
