Visakhapatnam police inspect 381 scrap shops for illegal activities

The city police on Sunday (January 4, 2026) conducted surprise checks on scrap shops within the city limits to identify any illegal activities or hazardous practices. The checks were carried out on the instructions of Commissioner of Police Shankabratha Bagchi.

As per the police, as many as 64 police teams comprising of about 200 personnel took part in the inspections and checked as many as 381 scrap shops. The inspections focused on whether CCTVs had been installed, their operational status, the presence of child labour, business details, and the type of scrap business—such as retail scrap, bulk yard, dismantler, vehicle breaker, or e-waste handler. The police officials also checked whether the shops had valid trade licence number, shops and establishments registration, purchase and sales registers, cash books, fire extinguishers, and if the shop is a registered vehicle scrapping facility (RVSF), etc.

During the inspections, the police seized 204 kg copper, 53 kg silver, 70 kg silver mixed with iron, 12 kg cable wires, three silver coils, two vehicles, which were unauthorised.

The seized property has been handed over to the respective crime police stations and four cases were registered.

Mr. Bagchi said that strict action will be taken against any scrap shop found indulging in illegal activities, dangerous practices, or negligence within the city limits.
