Met Eireann nationwide snow ice warning extended as ‘brutal cold’ takes hold

Experts are warning of what’s to come

Temperatures will plummet

The country is facing an extended spell of ice-cold conditions that will lead to treacherous travel conditions across the country this weekend and into next week.

The entire country is facing a weekend of sub-zero temperatures as an arctic blast sweeps down from the north.

This led to Met Eireann issuing a Status Yellow Snow and Ice warning for nine counties yesterday afternoon.

All of Connacht, along with Donegal, Cavan, Monaghan and Louth were initially placed under the warning. However, it was set to expire by 11am on Sunday.

Now, it’s been extended for a further 24 hours and will be in place until 11am on Monday.

A further status yellow nationwide warning for low temperatures and ice has also been issued by the national forecaster. This is due to temperatures falling between -2 and -4 degrees with sharp or severe frost and icy stretches.

It will be in effect for all counties in Munster, Carlow, Dublin, Kildare, Kilkenny, Laois, Longford, Meath, Offaly, Westmeath, Wexford, and Wicklow from 6pm this evening until 11am on Monday.

Leading meteorologist, Jeff Berardelli, has warned of a “brutal cold” that’s set to grip Ireland and Europe over the next few days.

Parts of northern Europe are experiencing 20 degrees below average, with up to 100cm of snow set to fall in the Balkans.

Jeff posted: “Brutal cold across Northern Europe (20°C below normal now) will overspread most of Europe soon, with cold dropping into the Mediterranean, Italy and the Balkans. Over the next 10 days, heavy snow will fall in spots with over 100 CM in parts of the Balkans and 50cm+ over the Alps and central Italian mountain ranges. This is all due to unusually warm air over Greenland, called the Greenland Block. It will displace cold air South over Europe and make for a wintry stretch for 10 days.
