The Met Office said Merseyside should expect wintry snow showers with a yellow weather warning for snow and ice in place for much of the day. The weather warning, which will come into force at 3pm on Sunday and will last until midday on Monday, forecast snow and ice and the potential for travel disruption.
A Met Office spokesperson said: “Snow showers are expected to push further inland across Wales, parts of north-west England, the west midlands and south-west England during Sunday evening. Along windward coasts, some rain and sleet is likely, but inland showers will fall as snow.
“Whilst not all locations in the warning area will see snow, 1-3 cm could develop in many places by Monday morning, with the potential for 5-8 cm to build up in a few locations, particularly across inland and higher parts of Wales. Icy stretches are likely to form widely.”
Merseyside is expected to have a wetter start to the day than most of the north west. According to the forecaster, the morning and early afternoon will be punctuated by heavy snow showers and sleet showers. Snow had already settled in parts of Merseyside by 9am.
As the day progresses, there will be sunny intervals before the potential for light snow showers returns in the evening. Temperatures are not expected to reach more than 3C.
Met Office chief forecaster, Neil Armstrong said: “With Arctic air now covering most of the UK, very cold weather will continue through the weekend, with minus double figures overnight in places and daytime temperatures struggling to rise above 0C for some.
“It looks like this cold spell could last well into next week and wintry hazards will continue with more weather warnings likely. It is therefore important people keep up to date with the latest forecast and warnings and plan ahead.”
The Met Office forecaster for the wider north west currently says: “Very cold and frosty to start, then a largely dry morning with plenty of sunshine. Sleet and snow showers arriving for some by this afternoon, these perhaps turning heavy in the south of the region, giving some local travel disruption. Maximum temperature 3C.”
Moving into tonight, the forecaster adds: “Sleet and snow showers clearing southwards early this evening, leaving a covering of snow and icy stretches in places. Becoming very cold with a severe frost in some inland spots. Minimum temperature -7C.”
