Teen led police in chase while driving stolen car

Sonny Beazer, 18, became involved in a police chase while driving a stolen Ford Fiesta.

A teenager became involved in a pursuit with police in a stolen car and drove off road in a bid to escape. On a separate occasion he was found in possession of cannabis when stopped by police.

Sonny Beazer, 18, was found to be driving a stolen Ford Fiesta, which had been stolen from a property on April 11. On April 24, he was seen by officers driving the red vehicle in Cardiff and a police chase ensued.

A sentencing hearing at Cardiff Magistrates Court on Friday heard the blue lights on the police vehicle were activated but the defendant did not stop the car. Don’t miss a court report by signing up to our crime newsletter here

He continued to speed in an attempt to evade the police and reached speeds of 60mph in residential areas. At one point Beazer came to an abrupt halt which caused the officers to perform an emergency brake.

The defendant then took a sharp turn into Pennsylvania and took a sharp left into Lincoln Court. Eventually he entered a dead end street.

Beazer and his passenger left the vehicle and ran in opposite directions, but police managed to detain the driver and he was arrested.

The defendant was stopped again by police on November 11 and when his vehicle was searched a bag of “herbal matter” was discovered in the footwell. When asked about the bag, he responded: “Yes that’s mine, I smoke it for personal use.”

Beazer, of Daviot Street, Roath, later pleaded guilty to dangerous driving, taking a vehicle without consent, and possession of cannabis. The court heard he has one previous conviction for possession of cannabis.

In mitigation it was said the defendant was “remorseful” for his behaviour and realises his actions could have caused an accident. The court was told Beazer is awaiting a diagnosis for ADHD and is working to reduce his cannabis intake.

Beazer was sentenced to 24 weeks imprisonment, suspended for 18 months. The defendant was ordered to carry out a 30-day rehabilitation activity requirement, ordered to pay £239 in costs and a victim surcharge, and was disqualified from driving for a year.
